Often, we can be frustrated by our children’s actions. Even more frequently, people around us do not understand how we live and what we are trying to deal with. This can lead to elevated levels of stress, anxiety and feelings of helplessness for both the parents and child. Often well meaning friends and family imply that there may be something ‘wrong’ with a child, which can lead parents into a maze of professional terminology, assessments and frighteningly long waiting lists.

At Larkholme, we are working closely with our partner agencies and research developers such as the University of Oxford to upskill our staff and empower our parents. Many children are on waiting lists for inappropriate medical diagnosis when the core concern is around their brain development.

Many things can affect how our brains develop: bereavements, separations, domestic violence, coercive control, too much screen time, siblings with additional needs, trauma, accidents, illness, poverty the list is extensive. The brain development for each individual can be affected differently by these events, some may experience a significant trauma and show little effect while others can experience a much smaller trauma but may be effected greatly. Each individual needs to have their needs met by the supporting adults in their life.

At Larkholme, all of our staff have had training in brain development and the different strategies we can use to help. It is important to remember that things can get better by understanding our brains and by committing to implementing strategies that will bring about change in behaviours.

We have put together a series of leaflets to help implement strategies around different behaviours. Remember creating, developing and maintaining change takes time and requires small steps at a time with support from those around you. At Larkholme, we can help you to begin that journey and to support you to enable your child to make those changes.
