At Larkholme, we believe that it is important to continue to allow our pupils to develop the Characteristics of Effective Learning alongside the National Curriculum. Therefore we do not have traditionally formal Year 1 classrooms but instead focus on the child and high quality teacher interactions through provision and adult led group work. As pupils move into Year 2 the curriculum approach becomes more traditional but still involves access to areas of provision

The characteristics of effective learning are described below:

Playing and exploring

• finding out and exploring

• using what they know in their play

• being willing to have a go

Active learning

• being involved and concentrating

• keeping on trying

• enjoying achieving what they set out to do

Creating and thinking critically

• having their own ideas

• using what they already know to learn new things

• choosing ways to do things and finding new ways
